I do believe sometimes a small series of photos will tell a story
better than text
This
is a before photo showing the site picked for the new backyard
aviary. It is a great site because it has
plenty of shade for the hot summer sun and faces southwest to get as much sun as possible
in the winter.
After photo: eight wall panels, 3 feet wide x 7 feet high; 3 of the wall
panels with 1x6 v-groove California redwood siding for protection from the cold winter winds; 4 feet down from the top of
the walls, the rest of the wall panels are fitted with clear acrylic plastic sheets for winter, if
needed. The
bottom of this aviary has 1/2" x 1" weld wire fabric instead of concrete to keep out unwanted visitors, then it is covered with a
patch of sand (grit) and strips of grass sod. It has a low 3 feet x 3 feet entry door instead of a safety catch. It is
rare that even a finch would try to fly by you that low.
This gentleman who possessed a backyard aviary when he lived in Holland is a
keeper of beautiful singing canaries and pairs of finches. Eight months passed, then he added 6 more wall
panels and 2 more roof panels. This doubled the size of his aviary.
Then it was decided that a deck and seating benches would be added so the whole
family could gather to relax and enjoy company, nature, and the birds' delightful songs. (Ah,
another good day to enjoy life.)
I
did build a long and a short picnic tables for this seating area (cannot locate
table photo yet).
The finished aviary project with lots of interaction going on inside. An
aviary that is always a pleasure to watch.
