Building aviaries is a vocation I thoroughly enjoy. It allows me to combine my profession with my most relaxing hobby. I have a strong background as a design-build General Contractor, with 35 years experience of direct on the job supervision of all the construction trades in all phases of residential and commercial construction. My background plus the ever present respect for the natural beauty of nature made it much easier to solve problems that arose in all my designs of custom aviaries. Extensive travel throughout the United States on some of the nation's largest projects gave me an understanding of the many different climates that America has.
For the past 30 years I have designed and built for many types of birds outside flight aviaries, attached to homes, or freestanding in gardens
Forced innovation (design by trial and error) created some aspects of designs. On items I felt could be done more suitably, I redid what was constructed, always learning from what I considered to be design flaws, constantly improving my backyard aviary designs. There are not many books on construction of backyard aviaries. The Europeans -- especially the English -- have been raising birds in outdoor aviaries for hundreds of years. Having colonies to the far corners of the world they imported some of the planet's most beautiful birds and successfully bred them in England.
For anyone considering building an backyard aviary, do it! You will be very pleasantly surprised at how much you will enjoy the benefits of your expense and labors. Yourself and your visitors will be rewarded with many hours of enjoyment and relaxation in just watching, listening and becoming enchanted.
This is a custom finch and canary aviary with a safety catch, full floor drainage with a bubbling fountain birdbath, that drains into a filtered fishpond. The kitchen and dining rooms of the home face this courtyard. You will hear lots of beautiful singing coming from the happy and very healthy birds flying in this backyard aviary.
A full safety catch is almost a must to have for some of the more faster flying finches like the cordon blue, owl, parrot finch, etc.
This is my first World Wide Web site. It will show some of my hundreds of photographs of different backyard aviaries, with custom and kit form panels, that I have developed over the years -- and there will be even more when I update. I have met some very wonderful people and it has been such great fun to work with them. What a great way to make a living!
